HIP Beauty Lipstick Packaging (Inspired by Roy  Lichtenstein)
About & Process
This lipstick packaging was inspired by the artist Roy Lichtenstein. I took his use of CYMK and used a pale CYMK palette. I also used bold black lines, which were common in his works. Bendy dots were another element Lichtenstein's commonly used in his paintings, so I knew I wanted to incorporate in this design. I used the bendy dots on the main front graphic and I also trickled them in by using the circle mirrors in the inside of the packaging. Bold graphics, such as comic-like women were another trademark of Lichtenstein. I decided to create one of my own and I made it look like myself with the wavy blonde hair and blue eyes. I used a tongue-in-cheek saying in the inside of the packaging which references Lichtenstein's famous Drowning Girl painting. The lips, the lipstick, the speech bubble, and the comic girl were all hand-drawn on pro-create. The front main graphic was inspired by his use of bold comic book like graphics with type. Often times the word placed in the graphic would have an exclamation mark. I chose a more complex die-line that I felt would best present a lipstick which was a slanted box. The slant of the box is also why I chose to slant the bold black lines, it has a nice harmony and aesthetic to it.

As for the the construction, I had many trials and errors. I ended up using two sheets of matte lightweight card-stock and I glued them together with rubber cement and hot glue. Doing this made the box feel like it was constructed using heavyweight card-stock, which supported the weight of lipstick and insert. I constructed the insert using two sheets of foam cut at a slanted angle with an exact knife. Then I measured and cut a hole for the insert. Next, I wrapped the insert in lightweight card-stock and cut a square for the hole.

I came up with the brand "HIP!" after researching popular slang in the 60s, which was when Pop Art, like Roy Lichtenstein's works, were popular. "Hip" was one of the words amongst the list and it stuck with me. I decided to add the exclamation mark after the graphic was created. So therefore HIP! Beauty (Lipsticks) packaging was created.
